Our HistoryThe Penobscot County Genealogical Society was founded in October, 2002, by Dale W. Mower of Bangor, Maine. Dale had been involved in genealogy for only a couple years at the time, but after attending a couple conferences sponsored by the Maine Genealogical Society, he felt that establishing a network of fellow researchers in Penobscot County could prove very beneficial both from an educational standpoint, as well as a social aspect. Dale received advice and support for his idea from Phil
Getchell, instructor of the Introduction to Genealogy course for Bangor Adult Education, Nancy Battick, past-president of Wassebec Genealogical Society in neighboring Piscataquis County, and Roxanne Moore Saucier, "Family Ties" columnist for the Bangor Daily News. On October 23, 2002, an exploratory organizational meeting was held at the Bangor Public Library. With approximately 35 interested individuals in attendance, it was agreed that there was a need for a local genealogical group in the Bangor area. The attendees decided about the name of the organization and the frequency of meetings, as well as elected it's inaugural slate of officers. Dale Mower was elected as the first president. He remembers thinking that if 10 people showed up for that organizational meeting, it would be a success. He was overwhelmed with the interest and assistance he received in making the group a reality. Shortly after its organization, PCGS joined the family of chapters of the Maine Genealogical Society. Penobscot County Genealogical Society is still evolving. The organization grew over it's first couple of years to a membership in excess of 160. In addition to its monthly meetings, the Society also published a monthly newsletter. As the third year began, the newsletter was changed to a quarterly publication, an attempt to still provide beneficial information to the members but with decreased time burden. When the fourth year began, the newsletter became a bi-monthly publication in response to our need to touch base with our long-distance members more frequently. We are still making other adjustments to make sure we are meeting the needs and expectations of our members and others doing research in Penobscot County. The one constant is our commitment to help family researchers connect with their roots in Penobscot County, and beyond. |
